At first when I got to work the first day to my job on Broad st. It was very excited because, well like I said before, I like nature so when I saw the plants and the flowers, the vegetables and everything it was very nice for me. The other good thing is that is very close to my house so I was very happy for that. when Jerica told us to harvest the vegetables I was happy,I like that! I am so happy because it is so beautiful seeing the plant grow. I feel like a mom, like when you see your child growing. I am going to miss my job specially the plants. But I am going to visit them to watch them grow more. Grow Hartford is a very good program.

LAPORTIA MCDAVID

Hi my name is Laportia Mcdavid and i am a youth employee for Grow Hartford .I had the experience of going to the Farmers market on 80 Coventry st. At the farmers market we all helped entertaining the little kids witch included face painting ,hop scotch, a coloring section and making sure they were having a good time .This was the first farmers market on the north end. the reason for this event was to provide good produce for the people on the north end.

Holcomb Farm

Hi my name is Whitney and I am an assistant to Jerica and Chiedza which is my supervisors. Yesterday we went to Holcomb farm in West Granby. When we got to Holcomb Farm a lot of things changed like the fruit and vegetables. When we got to the farm we were suppose to meet Sam which he is the head farmer. Went to the barn we were suppose to meet him at and he was not there he was harvesting in the field. In the time being one of the other farmers told us if we wanted we could go pick some green beans. Me and Yashira another youth worker started to pick the green beans. The others did not want to because it was raining. Me and Yashira had fun anyways. After I got to keep the green beans. Then Sam came to the barn and we introduced ourselves. Sam then told us what we were going to be doing. He told us what we were going to be doing and we were going to cut off the stems of the garlic and trim off the roots. Sam had a whole truck load of garlic and we did them all together as a team. Half of us cut off the stems and the other half trimmed the roots of the garlic and then put them on the rack and spread them out. It took us all about an hour and a half to do them all. To me it seemed like forever just sitting on a chair and trimming the roots. Towards the end of the job Chiedza started to sing and it was beautiful to me it felt like the time was going by faster. Then after we were done with our job. Jerica said that we had enough time to go and see the farm animals before we left. So we took a nice walk and went to the other barn and saw sheep, goats , pigs, chickens and a rooster. The bunnies did not come out I think they were to scared but it was OK. After the group started to make barking noises and the sheep and goats started to come out the the little house. I went close to see a sheep and it got scared. Soon after that we had to depart. Then we took a nice ride back to Broad St.

Field Trips

Hi my name is Whitney and I am the assistant to my supervisors Chiedza and Jerica. For as long as I have been in this program Grow Hartford I have learned many things. The most funnest activities that we have done was going on the field trips. One of the most amazing field trips was going to F.R.E.S.H New London. It was really fun. We met two really amazing people which was Arthur and Halie. These two people were amazing helping out different locations in New London with some youth workers. When they go around to different locations they sell their produce at low prices for those who can not afford much. They have a nice garden. Their garden have many fruits and vegetables. Some of them were potatoes, watermelon, tomato's, raspberries, cucumbers. Many of us have enjoyed the raspberries especially me and Jean. I helped out dig the red potatoes and some of the other youth workers. Some of the other youth workers were weeding out the watermelons. Our friend Arthur told us the difference between male and female fruits. The male fruits had a flower and no fruit at the end of the flower. The female fruit had a flower and a fruit having the fruit at the end of the flower. Our time was cut short because of the long trip home. But we said good-bye hoping to see each other again. Soon after we departed back to Hartford. This was a fun trip.
