Hi my name is Valerie Davila. I am 14 years old and I'm going to be a freshman in high school next year. I would describe my self as a fun and outgoing person. This summer i began my first real job. On the first day we had to go to an orientation meeting. This meeting had to do with the job and all the rules we had to follow. I was very excited when I got to finally work. In the orientation meeting they also separated us into two groups one is called build a book and the other is called grow Hartford I am apart of the grow Hartford. My group is a project of the Hartford food system, promoting a sustainable food system in Hartford by cultivating youth and community leadership. It also operates a half acre urban farm that serves as an outdoor classroom. In this job we plant many things such as broccoli, cabbages, potatoes, carrots and many other goods. On the day that the children from Worcester Massachusetts came i think we got along pretty well but they seemed to cocky but they were OK. The name of there group was called you grow there also apart of a group that do the same thing that we do. On July 19, 2007 i got my first pay check i was very happy and excited to go and spend the money that i worked for.
Hi my name is Whitney Vitale and on 7/18/2007 a wedesnday a group of kids from Worcester,MA came to grow Hartford in CT. We had a office in United Way waiting for them. They came about 45 minutes late. They came in 2 vans. We were all shy or was just not wanting to talk to them at all. There were minorities and cacuasian as well. they had about 20 kids and 4 staff. It was cloudy and it was drizzling. We showed them are farm and what we grow. Then some guy told us a lecture some people were not listening. It started to rain more so we went inside. At first ther kids had to sighn in at the front desk. They brought in food that they have made from their own farm, that was pretty cool. Then one of the You Grow staff presented herself. Then after that we started to do an icebreaker by telling our name and what is uor favrote thing. then after that we started to eat the food was pretty good. Then we got into mixed groups and made our ideal world I liked that it was pretty fun. Then when everyone was done we presented our presentations. Ours looked cruddy. Then it was 1 pm and it was time to leave. I stood 10 extra minutes because people were still there. Then I left yeah thet was pretty much it.

Our 2nd. week in Grow Hartford

On Wednesday, a group came from Worcester, Massachusetts. There program is called UGrow which is similar to Grow Hartford in Connecticut. When they came we did a ice breaker where we learned each other's names and mentiones something about ourselves. After the ice breaker we ate pizza, which was made by them from there farm. Last but not least, we split into groups, and talked about what we would like in our ideal town/city. then we drew it out on a large piece of paper. Before we had left we presented it with both programs. On Thursday, Grow Hartford walked to Park Branch library, where searched up information on what kins of plants would be good to plant on the side of the library on Park Street. After we decided to take another walk to a local cafe, La paloma Sabanera. From La Paloma Sabanera we walked to the Farmer's Market on Broad Street. In that facility we looked at the different things people grow in their farm's. For instance, people grow vegetables and fruits. Several students from Gorw Hartford signed up to ride a bike for 1 mile. On Friday, we went to Sequassan Street where we listened to this lady tell us about workplace ettiquete. We also took a personality quis where we had o be one of the following: directing, amirable, supportive, and expressive. After that, a police officer stopped by to explain to us that cops are not bad. Also, everything that they do in our community. We feel that the group had a different point of view and asked several questions. At the end of the day, we finally got our first pay check. YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ALWAYS THE BEST PART OF THE WEEK. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Grow Hartford

Hello, my name is Anjali. I am 14 years old. I live in the south end of Hartford. I'm going to the 9th grade. I've been going to Suffield middle school for 3 years and now i am going to Suffield High School. YAY me!!! This is my first year having a real job & i am glad to say it is with CREC being a gardener's assistant. I like my job so far because people like Jerica, Damaris, Marco, Six, and all the young workers are very cool. My job helps out a lot of people by growing food and giving it to TimeShare and what not. When I first found out that this summer I was going to be working outside in the sun, I was not impressed. This being my 4th day at work, I really enjoy it. Don't get me wrong there is some things that I don't like but I'm sure I would think that any more after the 6 weeks. Being a gardener is a very hard task and now I look at them differently because they weed grass, grow plants, and much more. With this job I do the same. At Laurel Street Garden, you may think they get paid to garden but really thy don't. All this time and effort is volunteering so therefore the vegetables and fruits that they grow are sold at little to no cost. Working here, I have learned about many bugs that may be found at the garden and just yesterday a couple of people and I was picking lettuce and we started to notice what we had learned in the lesson. My time at Grow Hartford has been a good one so far and I hope it stays that way!!! Sincerely, Anjali QuiƱones

GrowHartford

Let me introduce my self my name is Kristin Perez I am 14 years old and Grow Hartford is my first job getting payed, I go to E.B. Kennelly School. My job helps lots of people that are familiar with our program at anytime people who don't have food could come and get vegetables and fruit (fresh) at low cost. From this experience i have became a hard working teenager, to tell you the truth i didn't know that this job would be so hard working with dirt, bugs and i mean all types of bugs, between that <- and the heat you don't want to know. My Mother always told me that when i get a job it won't be easy and i always just ignored what she said but not i know that having a job is not a piece of cake... BY:Kristin Perez
Hello my name is Jose and a member of grow Hartford for 2007 summer. I'm 14 years old. i go to Hartford high and have good grades. I love to work hard, and this site needs my help. They need more supplies and workers. I think that i will work better if food was given to us. The sun makes the work harder, but the supervisors make it fun and they let us take breaks whenever we need too.
